Mid-Density NAND Flash Modules Offer More Choices for Cost-Effective Storage Allocation

Mid-density drives from ATP Electronics give a wider range of choices based on actual storage capacity needs, resulting in more cost-effective resource allocation.

 

Standard vs. Mid-Density

NAND flash products currently offered in the market typically come in densities in powers of two, such as 64/128/256/512/1024 GB. Differences between these capacities are naturally higher, and so is the cost jump for every capacity point. 

 

Mid-density drives have capacities that are "in between" standard capacities, such as:

  • 96 GB (between 64 GB and 128 GB)
  • 192 GB (between 128 GB and 256 GB)
  • 384 GB (between 256 GB and 512 GB)
  • 768 GB (between 512 GB and 1024 GB / 1 TB)

 

 

 

 

The mid-density solution is designed to address the limitation of fixed configurations that could lead to undue waste of resources. For example, a user who needs 160 GB of storage will have to purchase a drive with 256 GB capacity. This means the user will have to pay for the extra 96 GB that will not be used.

The ATP Solution Enables Better Resource Allocation

As capacity increases, the gap between two capacity points will become much larger. The gap between 512 GB and 1 TB is much bigger than that between 128 GB and 256 GB; hence, the cost differences also increase at higher capacity points.

 

By offering "in-between" storage capacities that do not come in powers of two, ATP mid-density drives deliver optimal cost-per-gigabyte, so the budget is allocated only for what is actually needed. These drives also minimize the cost jump from lower to higher capacity, resulting to more cost-effective resource allocation.

Suitable Capacity Selection

Write performance in general becomes better as capacity increases as more channels are being utilized. From a performance perspective, the figure below shows that if write performance needs to reach 200 MB/s, users would have to go with at least 256 GB capacity. With ATP’s new mid-density drives, 192 GB is available for reaching the needed performance. The cost difference between 192 GB and 256 GB can then be saved. With a wider range of capacity selections, suitable product density can be easily matched according to the applications at significant cost savings without compromising performance.
